Iran: Revolutionary Guard Claims 'Capture' Of Another U.S. Drone

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's state TV says the country's Revolutionary Guard has captured a U.S. drone after it entered the Iranian airspace over the Persian Gulf.

The report Tuesday quotes the Guard's navy chief, Gen. Ali Fadavi, as saying that the "intruding" drone was captured, but gave no further details on the location or when the incident occurred.

Iran claimed in 2011 it brought down a CIA spy drone after it entered Iranian airspace from its eastern borders with Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Tehran later said it recovered data from the RQ-170 Sentinel, a top-secret drone equipped with stealth technology.

NASA: Voyager 1 enters new region of solar system

This artist rendering provided by NASA shows Voyager 1 at the edge of the solar system. NASA said Monday, Dec. 3, 2012 that the long-running spacecraft has entered a new region at the fringes of the solar system thought to be the last layer before the beginning of interstellar space, or the space between stars. Mission chief scientist Ed Stone says it's unknown when Voyager 1 will finally break through to interstellar space. Once that happens, it'll be the first manmade object to leave the solar system. Mission chief scientist Ed Stone says it's unknown when Voyager 1 will finally break through to interstellar space. Once that happens, it'll be the first manmade object to leave the solar system. (AP Photo/NASA)

(AP) ? The unstoppable Voyager 1 spacecraft has sailed into a new realm of the solar system that scientists did not know existed.

Voyager 1 and its twin, Voyager 2, have been speeding away from the sun toward interstellar space, or the space between stars.

Over the summer, Voyager 1, which is farther along in its journey, crossed into this new region where the effects from the outside can be felt.

"We do believe this may be the very last layer between us and interstellar space," said chief scientist Ed Stone of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which manages the spacecraft.

Stone presented Voyager 1's latest location at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco.

Voyager 1 is on track to become the first manmade object to exit the solar system. Exactly when that day will come is unknown, partly because there's no precedent.

Stone estimated Voyager 1 still has two to three years to travel before reaching the boundary that separates the solar system from the rest of space.

Scientists were surprised to discover the unexpected region at the fringes of the solar system ? a testament to the mysteries of space.

For the past year, the team has seen tantalizing clues that heralded a new space environment. The amount of high-energy cosmic rays streaming in from outside the solar system spiked. Meanwhile, the level of lower-energy particles originating from inside the solar system briefly dropped.

Because there was no change in the direction of the magnetic field lines, scientists were confident that Voyager 1 had not yet broken through. They have dubbed this new zone a kind of "magnetic highway."

The Voyagers launched 35 years ago on a mission to tour the outer planets. Though Voyager 2 ? currently 9 billion miles from the sun ? launched first, Voyager 1 is closer to leaving the solar system behind. It's more than 11 billion miles from the sun.

That's because after the duo beamed home stunning pictures of Jupiter's big red spot, Saturn's shimmering rings and their moons, Voyager 2 ventured onward to Uranus and Neptune. To this day, it's the only spacecraft to explore these two icy worlds.

Instead of following its twin, Voyager 1 used Saturn's gravity to propel itself toward the solar system's edge.

Though the cameras aboard the nuclear-powered Voyagers have long been turned off, the probes have enough power to operate the other instruments until around 2020.

Despite their thick skins, alligators and crocodiles are surprisingly touchy

Thursday, November 8, 2012

Crocodiles and alligators are notorious for their thick skin and well-armored bodies. So it comes as something of a surprise to learn that their sense of touch is one of the most acute in the animal kingdom.

The crocodilian sense of touch is concentrated in a series of small, pigmented domes that dot their skin all over their body. In alligators, the spots are concentrated around their face and jaws.

A new study, published in the Nov. 8 issue of the Journal of Experimental Biology, has discovered that these spots contain a concentrated collection of touch sensors that make them even more sensitive to pressure and vibration than human fingertips.

"We didn't expect these spots to be so sensitive because the animals are so heavily armored," said Duncan Leitch, the graduate student who performed the studies under the supervision of Ken Catania, Stevenson Professor of Biological Sciences at Vanderbilt.

Scientists who have studied crocodiles and alligators have taken note of these spots, which they have labeled "integumentary sensor organs" or ISOs.

Over the years they have advanced a variety of different hypotheses about their possible function. These include: source of oily secretions that keep the animals clean; detection of electric fields; detection of magnetic fields; detection of water salinity; and, detection of pressure and vibrations.

In 2002, a biologist at the University of Maryland reported that alligators in a darkened aquarium turned to face the location of single droplets of water even when their hearing was disrupted by white noise. She concluded that the sensor spots on their faces allowed them to detect the tiny ripples that the droplets produced.

"This intriguing finding inspired us to look further," Catania said. "For a variety of reasons, including the way that the spots are distributed around their body, we thought that the ISOs might be more than water ripple sensors."

As a result, Leitch began a detailed investigation of the ISOs and their neural connections in both American alligators and Nile crocodiles.

Leitch found that these sensory spots are connected to the brain through the trigeminal ganglia, the nerve bundle that provides sensation to the face and jaw in humans.

In addition, his studies ruled out most of the alternative hypothesis for the ISOs function. For example, his anatomical studies didn't find pores that could release cleansing oil. Similarly, he found that the nerves in the ISOs didn't react to electric fields or, when submerged in water, to changes in salinity.

"I didn't test for sensitivity to magnetic fields, but we don't think this is likely either," said Leitch. In animals that can detect magnetic fields, he explained, the sensors are located inside the body, not on the surface.

What he did find is a diverse collection of "mechanoreceptors:" nerves that respond to pressure and vibration. Some are specially tuned to vibrations in the 20-35 Hertz range, just right for detecting tiny water ripples. Others respond to levels of pressure that are too faint for the human fingertip to detect.

Their analysis led the scientists to conclude that the crocodilian's touch system is exceptional, allowing them to not only detect water movements created by swimming prey, but also to determine the location of prey through direct contact for a rapid and direct strike and to discriminate and manipulate objects in their jaws.

Their finding that the most heavily wired ISOs are located in the mouth near the teeth suggests that the touch sensors help the animals identify the objects that they catch in their jaws. The sensors also appear to provide the sensitivity that female alligators and crocodiles need to delicately break open their eggs when they are ready to hatch and to protect their hatchlings by carrying them in their jaws, the same jaws that can clamp down on prey with a force of more than 2,000 psi.

Scientists identify trigger for explosive volcanic eruptions

Saturday, October 13, 2012

Scientists from the University of Southampton have identified a repeating trigger for the largest explosive volcanic eruptions on Earth.

The Las Ca?adas volcanic caldera on Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, has generated at least eight major eruptions during the last 700,000 years. These catastrophic events have resulted in eruption columns of over 25km high and expelled widespread pyroclastic material over 130km. By comparison, even the smallest of these eruptions expelled over 25 times more material than the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallaj?kull, Iceland.

By analysing crystal cumulate nodules (igneous rocks formed by the accumulation of crystals in magma) discovered in pyroclastic deposits of major eruptions, the scientists found that pre-eruptive mixing within the magma chamber ? where older cooler magma mixed with younger hotter magma ? appears to be the repeating trigger in large-scale eruptions.

These nodules trapped and preserved the final magma beneath the volcano immediately before eruption. Dr Rex Taylor, Senior Lecturer in Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton, investigated nodules and their trapped magma to see what caused the eruptions. He found that the nodules provide a record of the changes occurring in the magma plumbing right through to the moment the volcano erupted.

Dr Taylor says: "These nodules are special because they were ripped from the magma chamber before becoming completely solid ? they were mushy, like balls of coarse wet sand. Rims of crystals in the nodules grew from a very different magma, indicating a major mixing event occurred immediately before eruption. Stirring young hot magma into older, cooler magma appears to be a common event before these explosive eruptions."

Co-author of the study, Dr Tom Gernon, Lecturer in Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton, says: "The analysis of crystal nodules from the volcano documents the final processes and changes immediately prior to eruption ? those triggering the catastrophic eruptions. The very presence of mushy nodules in the pyroclastic deposits suggests that the magma chamber empties itself during the eruption, and the chamber then collapses in on itself forming the caldera."

The Las Ca?adas volcano is an IAVCEI (International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior) Decade Volcano ? identified by the international community as being worthy of particular study in light of their history of large, destructive eruptions and proximity to populated area.

Dr Gernon, who is based at the National Oceanography Centre at Southampton's waterfront campus with Dr Taylor, adds: "Our findings will prove invaluable in future hazard and risk assessment on Tenerife and elsewhere. The scale of the eruptions we describe has the potential to cause devastation on the heavily populated island of Tenerife and major economic repercussions for the wider European community."

Huntington Park Dentists Stress the Importance of Infant Dental Care ...

A few weeks back I was hanging out with a friend, who is a member at one of the local chain health clubs. She told me that they have advertisements all over the gym promoting chocolate milk as a post workout replenishing drink. Ummm, say what? Come to think of it, I have noticed a lot of people toting a carton of chocolate milk in one hand, and a gym bag in the other. Has the world gone mad? This is similar to the hiking and sporting goods store that I regularly walk by. It had a giant (20 foot!) mural advertising chocolate bars as an energy supplement. I thought the, ?It gives you energy? slogan was debunked at least ten years ago?

The two lower front teeth are usually the first to arrive at about 6-10 months of age. Teething continues until about 2 1/2 years old, when the second primary molars erupt. During teething, the child?s gums may look a little red and puffy, and they may experience excessive drooling and grouchiness. Other signs of teething may include: loss of appetite, difficulty sleeping, and a transient low-grade fever. If your baby experiences: a high or prolonged fever, a rash, or vomiting, these are signs that something else may be wrong and you should consult your pediatrician.

Oral hygiene: As mentioned before, good oral hygiene is very important when it comes to cosmetic dentistry. The stronger teeth and gums you have, the better it will be. Ask questions: It is natural that you will have questions before the procedure. If need be, make a list and take it when you talk to your dentist. Clear all your doubts.

I drink half a glass or less of vanilla flavored soy milk after a workout. Its nutritional counts are similar to 1% milk and it tastes really good, thanks to the vanilla, but with an even lower sugar count. Don?t forget about your protein powder. Add 1 scoop to milk or water for:100 calories2g fat25 g protein1 g sugar1 g carbs OR Use skim milk and/or protein powder (without milk just add water) to make a smoothie add:-1/2 banana, 1/2 cup OJ and fat free yogurt.-1/2 cup blueberries, fat free yogurt and 1Tbsp honey-How about chocolate protein powder, 1Tbsp peanut butter and 1/2 a banana? Yum!

If you are looking for a cosmetic dentist Huntington Beach, you should check with your Huntington Park dentist. If they don?t offer the services you need at their office, they can refer you to a professional cosmetic dentist that can help you with all your needs.

Dinos' DNA Demise: Genetic Material Has a 521-Year Half-Life

A new analysis confirms the widely held suspicion that DNA from dinosaurs and ancient insects trapped in amber cannot be recovered to make a 'Jurassic Park'-style theme park

From Nature magazine

Few researchers have given credence to claims that samples of dinosaur DNA have survived to the present day, but no one knew just how long it would take for genetic material to fall apart. Now, a study of fossils found in New Zealand is laying the matter to rest ? and putting paid to hopes of cloning a Tyrannosaurus rex.

After cell death, enzymes start to break down the bonds between the nucleotides that form the backbone of DNA, and micro-organisms speed the decay. In the long run, however, reactions with water are thought to be responsible for most bond degradation. Groundwater is almost ubiquitous, so DNA in buried bone samples should, in theory, degrade at a set rate.

Determining that rate has been difficult because it is rare to find large sets of DNA-containing fossils with which to make meaningful comparisons. To make matters worse, variable environmental conditions such as temperature, degree of microbial attack and oxygenation alter the speed of the decay process.

But palaeogeneticists led by Morten Allentoft at the University of Copenhagen and Michael Bunce at Murdoch University in Perth, Australia, examined 158 DNA-containing leg bones belonging to three species of extinct giant birds called moa. The bones, which were between 600 and 8,000 years old, had been recovered from three sites within 5 kilometres of each other, with nearly identical preservation conditions including a temperature of 13.1 ?C. The findings are published today in Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Diminishing returns
By comparing the specimens' ages and degrees of DNA degradation, the researchers calculated that DNA has a half-life of 521 years. That means that after 521 years, half of the bonds between nucleotides in the backbone of a sample would have broken; after another 521 years half of the remaining bonds would have gone; and so on.

The team predicts that even in a bone at an ideal preservation temperature of ?5 ?C, effectively every bond would be destroyed after a maximum of 6.8 million years. The DNA would cease to be readable much earlier ? perhaps after roughly 1.5 million years, when the remaining strands would be too short to give meaningful information.

?This confirms the widely held suspicion that claims of DNA from dinosaurs and ancient insects trapped in amber are incorrect,? says Simon Ho, a computational evolutionary biologist at the University of Sydney in Australia. However, although 6.8 million years is nowhere near the age of a dinosaur bone ? which would be at least 65 million years old ? ?We might be able to break the record for the oldest authentic DNA sequence, which currently stands at about half a million years,? says Ho.

The calculations in the latest study were quite straightforward, but many questions remain.

?I am very interested to see if these findings can be reproduced in very different environments such as permafrost and caves,? says Michael Knapp, a palaeogeneticist at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand.

Moreover, the researchers found that age differences accounted for only 38.6% of the variation in DNA degradation between moa-bone samples. ?Other factors that impact on DNA preservation are clearly at work,? says Bunce. ?Storage following excavation, soil chemistry and even the time of year when the animal died are all likely contributing factors that will need looking into.?

Improving nanometer-scale manufacturing with infrared spectroscopy

ScienceDaily (Oct. 10, 2012) ? Nanotechnology-based materials identification enables critically needed chemical metrology for nano-manufacturing.

One of the key achievements of the nanotechnology era is the development of manufacturing technologies that can fabricate nanostructures formed from multiple materials. Such nanometer-scale integration of composite materials has enabled innovations in electronic devices, solar cells, and medical diagnostics.

While there have been significant breakthroughs in nano-manufacturing, there has been much less progress on measurement technologies that can provide information about nanostructures made from multiple integrated materials. Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Anasys Instruments Inc. now report new diagnostic tools that can support cutting-edge nano-manufacturing.

"We have used atomic force microscope based infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR) to characterize polymer nanostructures and systems of integrated polymer nanostructures," said William King, the College of Engineering Bliss Professor in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering at Illinois. "In this research, we have been able to chemically analyze polymer lines as small as 100 nm. We can also clearly distinguish different nanopatterned polymers using their infrared absorption spectra as obtained by the AFM-IR technique."

In AFM-IR, a rapidly pulsed infrared (IR) laser is directed on upon a thin sample which absorbs the IR light and undergoes rapid thermomechanical expansion. An AFM tip in contact with the polymer nanostructure resonates in response to the expansion, and this resonance is measured by the AFM.

"While nanotechnologists have long been interested in the manufacturing of integrated nanostructures, they have been limited by the lack of tools that can identify material composition at the nanometer scale." said Craig Prater, co-author on the study and Chief Technology Officer of Anasys Instruments Inc. "The AFM-IR technique offers the unique capability to simultaneously map the nanoscale morphology and perform chemical analysis at the nanoscale."

The authors are Jonathan Felts and William King of University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and Kevin Kjoller, Michael Lo, and Craig Prater of Anasys Instruments Inc.

The research was sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and the Department of Energy.

Humble Bundle goes literary, offers octuplet of books at a humble price

The Humble Bundle tends to be associated with not just low prices, but also indie video games (and occasionally music). Today's bundle, however, centers on the literary-minded among us, offering a set of eight e-Books for just under $10. Of course, a main staple of the bundle is its pay what you want price model, which applies here as well -- should you only want six of the books, you can pay any price (one penny for six books! hot dog!). If you want access to John Scalzi's Old Man's War and Signal to Noise by Neil Gaiman and Dave McKean, you've gotta shell out over the average payment price (currently sitting at $9.84). If you want that sub-$10 price, we'd suggest heading over sooner than later. Another good reason? You've only got two weeks before this humble e-Book bundle disappears forever.

Meningitis outbreak toll: 119 cases, 11 deaths

(AP) ? The number of people sickened by a deadly meningitis outbreak has now reached 119 cases, including 11 deaths.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated the count on Tuesday.

New Jersey is the 10th state to report at least one illness. The other states involved in the outbreak are Tennessee, Michigan, Virginia, Indiana, Florida, Maryland, Minnesota, North Carolina and Ohio.

Officials have tied the outbreak of rare fungal meningitis to steroid shots for back pain. The steroid was made by a specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts. At least one contaminated vial was found at the company.

The company recalled the steroid that was sent to clinics in 23 states, and later recalled everything it makes.

PFT: Jennings' recovery takes step back

Brent Celek, Bernard PollardAP

Ravens safety Bernard Pollard isn?t happy about all the mistakes he saw the replacement officials make in Sunday?s loss to the Eagles, and he says it?s time for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to do something about it.

Pollard said on 98.5 The Sports Hub?s Toucher & Rich show that the replacement officials are out of their depth in trying to keep up with a game at NFL speed, and that Goodell needs to show the decisiveness he has shown in other aspects of running the league and bring the officials? lockout to a halt.

?My issue is we have a commissioner that is jumping on board to hammer every other issue down in the NFL . . but we have something at hand that is messing up the integrity of the league and nothing is being done about it,? Pollard said. ?These guys need to be out. I respect them as men. I understand that they were put in a position they can?t handle. But who is going to turn down an NFL officiating gig when you probably get paid more than you got paid in the lingerie league or whatever. Who is going to turn that down? But when it?s all said and done, the commissioner needs to do something about it.?

Pollard said he believes the regular officials are worth everything they?re asking for from the owners, and the replacement officials seem more like overwhelmed fans than professionals.

?These guys are star-struck,? Pollard said. ?I understand they respect us as players, but when you step on that field you can?t be bullied. When you throw that flag, stand by that flag. When you make one of those calls, you point with power, with integrity, and these guys don?t have it.?

Pollard stressed that he believes the replacement refs are doing their best. He just doesn?t think their best is good enough.

?Nobody is perfect,? Pollard said. ?We all make bad plays and people make bad calls. But when it?s all said and done, everything that is happening every single game ? and it?s consistently happening ? something needs to be done about it. When it?s all said and done, this is something the real officials and the league have to iron out. They need to meet now, because this has gone too far.?

Pollard is far from the only one who feels that way, but so far there are few signs of the lockout ending any time soon. Pollard ? and the rest of us ? may need to get used to the replacements.

Corrupt officials beware: China's Twitter empowers citizen-vigilantes

China's version of Twitter, Weibo, has trained a critical public eye on authority figures across the country, spawning a growing cadre of citizen-vigilantes on the prowl for evidence of corruption.

For years he has been able to get away with almost any kind of behavior, unaccountable to the public and rarely held to account by his superiors.

Suddenly, as two mid-ranking bureaucrats are discovering to their chagrin, he practically cannot even hitch up his shirt cuffs in public, let alone throw his weight around, without the public jumping on his case and possibly getting him fired.

Not because Chinese politics have changed, mind you, but because of Sina Weibo, the Twitter-like social media forum that has trained a critical public eye on people in authority across the land.

Just ask Yang Dacai. As head of Shaanxi Province?s Safety Supervision Bureau, he was called to the scene of a ghastly crash 10 days ago that had killed 36 bus passengers. For some reason, he was smiling inanely in a reporter?s photograph of the scene that went viral on Weibo, and which infuriated internauts.

Within a couple of days, he had been identified, and five photographs of him in different circumstances wearing five different luxury watches had been scoured from the Web and posted on Weibo. Where, demanded indignant citizens smelling corruption,?had a civil servant earning $1,500 a month found the money to buy $40,000 worth of wristwatches?

Mr. Yang is currently under investigation by the Shaanxi provincial disciplinary body, which is looking into allegations of bribery.

Col. Fang Daguo, a political commissar with the People?s Liberation Army, is also under investigation, and has been suspended from his job to boot, because of another Internet outcry.

And in a new sign of Weibo?s power, Internet posts have inspired even the government?s official purveyor of propaganda, the Xinhua news agency, to join in the criticism.

A flight attendant on China Southern airlines posted an account last week (illustrated by photographs and retweeted by others more than 30,000 times) of how Fang had hit and gripped her hard enough to leave bruises and tear her dress when she asked him to move his luggage from the aisle before the plane took off for the southern city of Guangzhou.

Cue public outrage, and, unusually, a quick statement from Fang?s employer. Except that the statement said he had done no wrong, suggesting instead that his wife had been involved in a little pushing and shoving.

This flew in the face of eyewitness reports, and was too much even for Xinhua ? normally the staunchest defender of officialdom in the land.

?Have you done a comprehensive and objective investigation?? the Xinhua bureau in Guangzhou asked in a Weibo post, challenging the official version of events. ?Is what your investigation found really the same as what you published? If not, why not??

The highest officials in government ? President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao ? have warned repeatedly that corruption poses the gravest threat to Communist Party rule in China, as the gap between rich and poor widens. It has made little difference.

Sometimes the new citizen-vigilantes on the Web claim a scalp: In 2008 an official in the eastern city of Nanjing was featured in an online photo wearing a fancy watch; a public outcry led to an investigation that led to an 11-year jail term for bribery.

But sometimes the old ways still win out. When Shi Junrong, a reporter for the Xi?an Evening News in northeastern China, wrote an article in June wondering about the wickedly expensive cigarettes a county official had been photographed smoking, it wasn?t the official who was suspended ? it was Mr. Shi.

Planned AEG sale means hazy future for LA sports

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A for-sale sign for the owner of the Staples Center arena, the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, Major League Soccer's LA Galaxy and a stake in the LA Lakers would be a major shock to the city's sports, entertainment and business establishment at any time.

But when Denver-based Anschutz Co. said Tuesday that it was "commencing a process" to sell subsidiary Anschutz Entertainment Group, the announcement left especially big questions about AEG's central role in courting the NFL's return to Los Angeles with Farmers Field, a planned downtown stadium going through late-round approvals with the city.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was not so shocked, saying he had long known about the possible sale even as he publicly pushed for the building of the stadium. He insisted it would not derail the city as it pulls closer to the return of the NFL since the 1994 departure of the Rams and Raiders.

Villaraigosa said both Denver billionaire Phillip Anschutz and AEG President Tim Leiweke have assured him the city's football future will remain the same.

"I have worked with both Phil Anschutz and Tim Leiweke for years to bring a football team to Los Angeles. I speak to both of them on a regular basis, and I have known about this potential sale for some time," the mayor said in a statement Tuesday. "I have the commitment from both of them that this won't affect plans for an NFL team to return to Los Angeles in the near future and so will not affect my support for moving ahead with Farmers Field."

The stadium overcame a major hurdle last week when the city's planning commission unanimously recommended that the city council approve its environmental impact report. The council will take up the issue on Sept. 28.

If an agreement is reached, AEG and the city have said they would work on the puzzle's most important piece ? convincing an NFL team to move ? early next year.

Councilwoman Jan Perry, whose district includes the proposed stadium site next to the Staples Center, said she did not know about a pending sale but agreed that it wouldn't have adverse effects on courting a team.

"The city has done a good job of protecting the taxpayer's interest in negotiating an agreement," Perry told The Associated Press, "so whoever steps into the shoes of Mr. Anschutz will have the same obligations."

Perry said the move "arguably is very positive" because she suspected it could lead to an enthusiastic new partner anxious to get in on the city's NFL prospects.

It wasn't immediately clear how far along the company is in the sale process, or whether it has entertained any offers. The price for AEG could be well into the billions.

Anschutz Co. said in the statement that it has hired as financial advisers the Blackstone Group, which recently managed the sale of the Los Angeles Dodgers to a group that includes former Lakers star Magic Johnson.

"Given the success of the management team and employees in establishing AEG as one of the premier real estate development, live sports and entertainment platforms in the world," Anschutz president Cannon Y. Harvey said in a statement, "this is an appropriate time to transition AEG to a new qualified owner. This process represents a unique opportunity to maximize value for all concerned."

AEG's holdings also include the professional soccer team Los Angeles Galaxy, part-ownership of the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers, and major entertainment and real estate holdings in downtown Los Angeles. Outside of L.A., AEG owns Major League Soccer's Houston Dynamo and New York's Barclay's Center, the new home of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets. It also owns arenas in Sweden, China and Australia.

The potential sale was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

AEG transformed the city's landscape with the building of Staples Center and the addition of the LA Live entertainment complex, helping to revitalize a long-neglected downtown and bring energy and several championships to its sports teams.

Opened in 1999, the Staples Center is among the world's busiest arenas. It hosted six playoff games in four days for its main tenants ? the NBA's Lakers and Clippers, and the NHL's Kings, who won their first Stanley Cup in June.
